Washington, D.C. – In a joint effort to raise public awareness about the importance of defending the legal right to voluntary, informed consent to vaccination, the National Vaccine Information Center (NVIC) and Mercola.com co-sponsored the first annual Vaccine Awareness Week (Nov. 1-6, 2010). An online interactive database and communications network, the NVIC Advocacy Portal, was launched to help Americans protect and expand vaccine exemptions in state vaccine laws.

During the past seven days, thousands of Americans living in all 50 states registered for the free NVIC Advocacy Portal at www.NVICadvocacy.org to volunteer to work toward securing medical, religious and conscientious belief exemptions to vaccination in all state vaccine laws.

“It is time to get serious about legally defending the human right to informed consent to medical risk-taking in America, “ said NVIC co-founder and president Barbara Loe Fisher. “Everyone who registers for NVIC’s Advocacy Portal will learn how to stand up for the legal right to make voluntary vaccine decisions for themselves and their children.”

Reaching more than two million people during Vaccine Awareness Week with a series of articles and videos about vaccination published on Mercola.com, Dr. Joseph Mercola urged Americans to join with NVIC and Mercola.com and organize to protect vaccine choices.

“Americans should be free to say "yes" or "no" to using vaccines without being harassed or punished for the informed decision they make,” said Dr. Mercola. “Like any drug or medical procedure a doctor recommends, getting a vaccine is a personal health choice and the voluntary consent of the patient is absolutely necessary.”

NVIC is a non-profit charity founded in 1982 to prevent vaccine injuries and deaths through public education and defend the informed consent ethic in medicine. Mercola.com, which ranks in the top five most visited health information websites in the world, hosts NVIC’s website at www.NVIC.org and NVICAdvocacy.org.  NVIC and Mercola.com have partnered since 2008 to research and disseminate referenced information about vaccination and health.
