October 2011: The Good & Bad News

The last half of 2011 brought good news and bad news for the vaccine safety and informed consent movement. The good news is that more Americans than ever before know that vaccines are not safe and effective for everyone and even the scientific community are beginning to acknowledge that fact.

The bad news is that the wealthy and powerful Pharma/Medical lobby is in the process of persuading state legislators - despite strong opposition from parents and enlightened health care professionals - to force vaccination and strip parents of the legal right to make medical decisions, including vaccination decisions, for their children. Big drug corporations and medical trade associations are behind the unprecedented assault on informed consent rights in America.

What happened in the last half of 2011 is the final wake-up call for Americans, who are, day by day, losing their right to make voluntary vaccination choices for themselves and their children.

CA Governor Betrays Parents & Endangers Children
In a national press release on Oct. 10, NVIC criticized California Governor Jerry Brown for bowing to pressure from the pharmaceutical and medical trade lobby when he signed a controversial bill (AB499) into law that allows 12 year old children to be vaccinated without the knowledge or consent of their parents. The new law allows minor children as young as 12 years old to be given Gardasil and hepatitis B vaccine, as well as future vaccines sexually transmitted diseases without the informed consent of their parents.

NVIC Director of Advocacy, Dawn Richardson, who designed NVIC's online Advocacy Portal, worked with families in California to provide Governor Brown and the public with information about why the legislation violated parents' long held legal right to make medical decisions for their minor children. "Big Pharma lobbyists have been working behind the scenes in California, Washington and other states to take away parental rights and vaccine exemptions," she said, "and we expect they will go into other states in 2012 so it is important for everyone to sign up for the Advocacy Portal and help NVIC take a stand in those states."

The new CA law is a violation of vaccine safety provisions in the 1986 National Childhood Vaccine Injury Act that mandated doctors and all vaccine providers give parents vaccine benefit and risk information before vaccination. It is estimated that it will cost the state of California millions of dollars to implement the new law.

More than 30% of Americans living in households with children under age 18 express concern about vaccine safety, according to a recent Thomson Reuters-NPR Health Poll and more than 25% of all Americans are concerned about the value and safety of vaccines.

In a study published in Pediatrics (November), it is reported that about 13 percent of American parents have skipped one or more vaccines for their children or delayed giving them vaccines due to concerns about safety. About 2 percent of parents refused all vaccines for their children.

IOM Report Acknowledges Individual Susceptibility

On Oct. 25, the Institute of Medicine (IOM) Committee to Review Adverse Effects of Vaccines published their report "Adverse Effects of Vaccines: Evidence and Causality after a three-year review of scientific evidence in existing medical literature about the adverse effects of eight vaccines given to children and adults: MMR, DTaP, hepatitis B, hepatitis A, varicella, pneumococcal, influenza, and meningococcal.

The most startling conclusion is that the IOM Committee found too few methodologically sound studies in the medical literature to come to a conclusion about whether more than 100 serious brain and immune system problems reported after vaccination, such as multiple sclerosis, arthritis, lupus, stroke, SIDS, autism and asthma, were or were not caused by one or more of the vaccines they studied.

The IOM acknowledged that "Both epidemiologic and mechanistic research suggest that most individuals, who experience an adverse reaction to vaccines, have pre-existing susceptibility."

THE GREATER GOOD Film Examines Vaccine Safety

Since its first public showing at the Dallas Film Festival on April 2, 2011, the new documentary film exploring both sides of the vaccine safety debate - THE GREATER GOOD - has generated a buzz in the film community and among vaccine educated families. The film has won the 2011 Amsterdam Film Festival Cinematic Vision Award and the Koroni Award, 2011 Sidewalk Moving Pictures Film Festival. Now, the long awaited national premiere of the movie is continuing this week (see schedule above) in Los Angeles and will premiere in New York City in November (more details posted on NVIC's Facebook page).
