The Centers for Disease Control’s (CDC) next stop in their public engagement meetings on meningococcal vaccine policy options is Seattle, Washington on July 12th followed by meetings in Chicago on July 21 and Denver on July 25. The CDC is seeking public feedback on a proposal to give a series of meningococcal shots to babies under one year old.
NVIC is questioning the safety, effectiveness and cost of the proposed expansion of meningococcal vaccine use in children. The proposal would add three to four doses of meningococcal vaccine in infancy to the already recommended doses at 11-12 years of age and for all college freshmen. Currently, the CDC recommends 48 doses of 14 vaccines for children from day of birth to age six with more than half of the doses given before 12 months of age.
NVIC Questions Proposed Policy, Opposes Mandates
NVIC attended a CDC vaccine stakeholder meeting on May 25 in Washington, D.C. and expressed concern that almost all universal use vaccine recommendations by CDC are turned into legal mandates at the state level. NVIC opposes mandated use of meningococcal vaccine and supports the ethical principle of voluntary, informed consent to use of meningococcal vaccine and all vaccines.
Meningococcal disease is a bacterial infection that occurs rarely in the United States. Out of the U.S. population of 308 million people, meningococcal disease is estimated to affect between 1400 and 3000 American children and adults (.05-1.1 per 100,000) every year. July Meeting Schedule and Registration Information
NVIC has obtained registration information for ALL meetings. We strongly encourage the public to attend these meetings and voice their opinion about expanding the recommended use of meningococcal vaccine to infants and the mandates that will surely follow such recommendations.
Attendees are requested to stay for the full day. Those who pre-register and attend the full meeting are eligible to receive $75.00 from The Keystone Center, the meeting facilitator.
