Today, Sept. 5, parents will hold a press conference at 1 p.m. PT (4 p.m. ET), in Sacramento on the North Steps of the State Capitol to ask Governor Brown to veto AB2109, a bill passed by the legislature to restrict the filing of a personal belief exemption to vaccination for children to attend school.
Parents Ask Governor Brown to Veto AB2109
"Parents and anyone concerned about our right to make informed choices about vaccination are welcome to attend the press conference today. We need to let Governor Brown know that he should veto AB2109," said NVIC California Co-Director, Dawn Winkler, who will speak at the press conference along with comedian/actor Rob Schneider. Both Winkler and Schneider spoke at a June California Senate hearing opposing the bill.
If Governor Brown signs AB2109, it would force most parents to pay a medical doctor or other state-designated medical worker for an appointment to ask for a signature on a personal belief vaccine exemption form. In California, the personal belief exemption applies to beliefs that are religious, philosophical or conscientiously held.
Pediatricians, State Health Employees and Pharma-Allied Lobbyists Back the Bill
Pediatrician Assembly Member Richard Pan (D-Sacramento) introduced AB2109 last February and was quickly joined by lobbyists for state health department employees, American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and other medical trade associations funded by pharmaceutical companies marketing vaccines. In 2011, the same lobby rammed a bill restricting philosophical belief exemption through the Washington state legislature and tried to take the philosophical exemption away in Vermont this year but failed.
