NVIC Calls Out AAP for Censorship & Intimidation

By NVIC Staff
Published November 15, 2011 in Medical Policy

Today, NVIC sent out a press release citing the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) for engaging in intimidation in attacking NVIC and a flu prevention video sponsored by NVIC for Delta Air Lines in-flight programming during the month of November. NVIC is criticizing the AAP’s attempts to censor and block public access to full and accurate information about influenza.

NVIC was offered the opportunity to be a paid sponsor of a video about staying well during the flu season that would be included in Delta’s in-flight programming during November 2011. On Nov. 7,  Forbes magazine published an article with a copy of a letter signed by the AAP President Robert Block, MD, accusing Delta of “putting children’s lives at risk” by showing travelers the NVIC sponsored video because it contains “harmful messages.”

In the AAP letter, the Pharma-funded medical trade association alleged that “The [NVIC] ad urges viewers to become informed about influenza and how to stay well during the flu season without resorting to the influenza vaccine.”

NVIC co-founder and president Barbara Loe Fisher responded, “Without cause, the AAP has used their considerable financial resources and political influence to intimidate Delta for simply showing a video that offers accurate information about ways to stay healthy during the flu season, including talking with doctors about getting a flu shot. Censorship and attacks on consumer advocacy groups working to institute informed consent protections in public health policies should not be tolerated in this or any society that cherishes free speech and the right to self determination.”

Flu Vaccine Less Than 70 Percent Effective

The AAP letter stated that “influenza vaccine continues to be the best way to protect against the disease,” without acknowledging that a recently published scientific study found that the flu vaccine is less than 70 percent effective in preventing influenza, which confirms previous studies questioning influenza vaccine efficacy and effectiveness. A top flu expert at the CDC has said that about 80 percent of flu-like illness reported in the U.S. every year is not influenza but is caused by other viruses and bacteria.

“The AAP’s leadership is clearly threatened by educated consumers, who have every right to engage in critical thinking when making choices about how to stay healthy,” said Fisher. “Why is the AAP so afraid to admit that washing our hands, covering our mouths when coughing, eating nutritious foods, getting enough sleep, exercising, and lowering stress are also important ways to stay well during the flu season and all year around?”

Your comment about the flu vaccine being less than 70% effective concerns me because I think you are misinterpreting the science. The authors report that 1.2% of the vaccinated group contracted the flu, while 2.7% of the control group contracted the flu. 1.2 is 56% lower than 2.7, so they are refering to the "relative" difference. In absolute terms, 1.5 cases of the flu are prevented when 100 people are vaccinated, which is far less impressive.

I see absolutely nothing wrong with this video. Since when is prevention NOT the best way to fight illness and since when is a vaccine that is proven for the most part ineffective the better choice? I hope you never stop fighting Barbara and the NVIC. My family stands behind you all the way!!!

The ad hardly looks like it offers any dangerous information. Is there a youtube link to the ad, so I can share it with people, even if Delta wouldn't.

How are so many doctors persuaded to push these vaccines. Whatever happen to 'first do no harm'. Do any of these doctors even bother to investigate, or do they just follow orders. It flies in the face of common sense. Don't medical schools teach courses in physiology, like how the immune system works. This years flu shot is the same as last years, so why do you need to be re immunized? answer Because the flu shot isn't effective. If it worked your body would have produced antibodies and you would not need to get the same shot again this year. I say, follow the money. I work for a hospital that made it mandatory this year. I had to get a medical waiver not to let someone inject me with neurotoxins. The information is out there. Why do so many people just roll up their sleeves.

Truth always surpasses Science Fiction, and vaccines and their history is Science Fiction. Vaccines and their history is really a pack of viscious lies perpetrated by morons and money grubbers.

The advice of washing hands to prevent the spread of disease is posted at every sink in the hospital I work for. This is good advice for everyone. Why is the AAP not backing up this information while promoting the action of washing hands in hospitals? Not sure the right hand knows what the left hand is doing...(parden the pun)

I welcome this kind of information . I run a alternative clinic in Scotland and see lots of problems with vaccines in the children and adults that I test.

Keith Mead You don't take a percentage difference between percentages. That's statistical nonsense. You subtract two percentages to get the percentage difference.
